TEACHERS AND SPECIALISTS
PARENT PARTICIPATION SPECIAL EVENTS EMERGENCIES AND SCHOOL CLOSINGS FOOD TEACHERS AND SPECIALISTS The strength of our program is the dedication of our staff. Each classroom has a head teacher who is state certified and one or two qualified assistant teachers. Specialists in art, drama, foreign language, music and physical education work with all of the classes.DISCOVERY invests in the ongoing professional development of all faculty and staff. Faculty participate in local and national conferences in early childhood education, take classes at nearby universities and attend professional development activities several times per year. All faculty are CPR and first aid certified. The average adult/child ratio is 1:6. PARENT PARTICIPATION Parents help to make the learning experience at DISCOVERY even richer, and are regularly invited into the classroom to contribute their time and energy. Parents often help by reading to children, sharing talents, or participating in field trips. Parents are encouraged to participate in our cultural diversity unit by sharing information regarding a particular culture – food, native dress, currency, language, films, books, music, etc. Parent Teacher conferences are scheduled twice yearly. These conferences give parents the opportunity to learn about their child's progress, get better acquainted with staff and learn more about our developmentally appropriate curriculum. Additionally, weekly written correspondence from staff to parents informs parents of the activities going on in their child's classroom. DISCOVERY has an "open door" policy regarding classroom visits. Parents or caregivers are invited to attend school with their child whenever desired--for a quick pop-in, or as long as they choose. SPECIAL EVENTS DISCOVERY sponsors many special events throughout the school year. Most events like pot-luck dinners and Grandparents Day help families and our children to have fun and feel a sense of belonging. Some events, like parents-only information seminars concerning Kindergarten, are educational. All of the events are the result of lots of hard work on the part of volunteers. We encourage you to help an event happen AND help each event become a success by participating. EMERGENCIES AND SCHOOL CLOSINGS In case of emergency or school closings (for example, due to inclement weather) an email will be sent and primary cell phone number will be called (which was filled out on school application). In case of emergency, secondary phone number will also be called if necessary. PLEASE CONTACT THE SCHOOL IF THERE IS A CHANGE IN YOUR PRIMARY AND/OR SECONDARY PHONE NUMBERS OR EMAIL ADDRESS. FOOD Full-day children bring lunch with a beverage. Parents provide daily snacks on a sign-up/rotation basis. We encourage parents to bring in healthy food items. DISCOVERY has adopted a policy of "nut-awareness" and we ask parents to adhere to our policy. |
